Mechanics of engineering materials, mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download. Books and publications properties by the use of many up-todate engineering examples. The style of the English is sirnple and straightforward with each Download PDF. Recommend Documents. Engineering mechanics of composite materials. Deformation and fracture mechanics of engineering materials.

Deformation and fracture mechanics of engineering materials 4th edition. Engineering mechanics. Handbook of engineering mechanics. Principles of engineering mechanics. Mechanics and engineering. Mechanics of materials. The style of the English is sirnple and straightforward with each new term or concept being explained prior to its use.

This clarity enhances the use of the book not only for sequential reading but also for dipping into to verify facts or to explain unknown terms or concepts. This approach should be much appreciated by students as they are not likely to be mystified while reading the book out of sequence. The authors state in the Preface that it is intended for engineering students rather than materials students.

This is achieved by treating the theoretical concepts to a level to give understanding of relationships without pursuing them so far as to appear irrelevant to an engineering student. This approach was typified by the treatment of phases diagrams which were not covered in a separate section but introduced and explained where mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download for understanding, as, for example, in solution strengthening.

The level was carefully increased as the topic developed. The authors also mention that it is assumed that students have no formal knowledge of engineering science. However, I feel that in order to make the most of the examples given, students do need to have been brought up in an engineering culture such that they are aware of the basic functions of engineering components.

At first I was surprised that 1 could not immediately find certain topics listed, but on further reading I found the parts of those topics dispersed throughout the succeeding chapters. Students new to the subject would not find this a problem. It also covers recent topics such as MMCs, not only theoretical but also mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download production and use.

I appreciated the short sections on synthesis of materials as these give an appreciation of ease of production, energy consumption and difficulties associated with recycling scrap. Again there is no separate section on recycling but this is covered in passing within the individual material groups. I particularly liked the sections on elastomers, wood and solidification, topics which are frequently neglected in student texts. Additionally, the sections on electronic materials and failure were well done and in line with most other modern textbooks.

However, the section on corrosion was not covered in much depth but did give an appreciation of the mechanisms involved, and the means which could be used to combat the damage, mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download. I would have liked to have seen a 58 more systematic Materials Selection section as this is one of the key areas for engineering students.

I liked the format of the end-ofchapter problems, mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download. The questions are very directed and are designed to aid understanding and are supplemented by further design questions which build on that understanding. The book feels thoroughly modern with many two-tone, clear illustrations.

However, I was somewhat disquieted to find that some illustrations had no references. The photographs were mainly well reproduced, apart from some slightly underexposed and some slightly fuzzy micrographs.

However, some were a little too small to give the required detail. For example, the section through a jet engine on page 4 measured 58 X 25 mm. In certain areas this gave a crowded feel as if too much was being packed in. The paperback volume was well produced with firm binding and had a quality feel. The price of f25 is probably on the upper limit of the student budget but still represents good value for money, and it might be the book that a student would choose for reference use after graduation.

Benhum, R. Cruwjord und C. Armstrong Longman. Professor Emeritus Peter Benhamwasformerly Professorof Aeronautical Engineering, but unfortunately died during the preparation of this edition. The first edition appeared in under the authorship of P. Benhamand F. Wamock, published in ProfessorWarnock died a few years after its publication. The first edition was also accompanied by a solutions manual, containing around worked examples, mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download.

This new edition brings the subject matter fully up to date, but with all the worked examples contained within a single volume. New to the book is the extensive useof computer spreadsheet representations in the solution of an increasednumber of practical engineering problems. At over pages, the book is substantialand contains21 chaptersand four appendices. Overall, the content of the book has not changeda great deal but there have beenmajor changesin its presentation and, where appropriate, relevant material updated.

ChaptersI to 9 remain essentially the sameas the previous edition except for a changeof format more conducive to the intended readership. The original Chapter IO on structural analysis has been omitted. The remaining chapters have been heavily revised, particularly Chapter I7 on finite element analysis.

The appendicescontain the usualgeometricaland materialspropertiesinformation typical of this type of book. The subject matter rangesfrom elementary topics suchasstatically determinateand indeterminate stress systems, torsion, bending, energy methods, and buckling, to intermediate-leveltopics suchasyield criteria, stressconcentration, plasticity, plates and shells, to more advanced topics such as finite element mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download, fracture mechanics, fatigue and creep.

This book is extremely well illustrated with a large numberof high-quality line diagrams, tables and graphs, and the odd photograph. Although eachchapter is self-contained,in the first half of the book, each chapter builds on the previous oneas the principlesare established, while the second half of the book appliestheseprinciplesin specificareas.

The arrangementis logically presented, allowing readersto either work through the book chapter by chapter, as is the casewith studentsusingthis asa coursebook extensively the case with the previous editionor for more experienced readers to browse and select specific topics. The answersto all the problemsare to be found in the last appendix.

The subject Books of each chapter is clearly explained through a careful balance of first-principles theory and worked examples. A lot of the examples are new to this edition and, importantly, of a practical nature, which is particularly relevant for student use. The text is aimed primarily at mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download students of mechanical engineering and related subjects, and is more than adequate for the whole of most of these types of mechanics of engineering materials benham pdf download courses.

Selected parts of the book though may provide useful reference material to students on non-vocational courses and possibly students at post-graduate level. The book is not really intended for practising engineers, but its clear selfexplanatory style should prove useful in quickly elucidating any specific topic, before applying it to a particular industrial problem. The number of books on the market in this popular subject area is large and it takes something special to stand out from the rest.

This book does just that through quantity of information, quality of presentation, and value for money. The book is highly recommended and well worth the purchase price. You may actually find it necessary to purchase several other books to get the same subject coverage. The agreementwas signed in Bethesda by Robert N.
